Professional lighting designer Kathy Perkins visits Stage Lighting class Tuesday 2/19

Kathy Perkins will meet with the TD-366/Art-366 Class on Tuesday 2/19 from 4:00PM – 5:15 PM in Vilas room 4044. She will present her portfolio, show examples of her work, and discuss the role of the lighting designer.

Kathy is at UW-Madison as the department of Theatre and Drama’s  2019 Lorraine Hansberry artist-in-residence, and to participate in “Women Theatre Artists, A Symposium”. This is a joint residency with Afro-American Studies. This symposium also celebrated women directors, designers, producers and other theatre artists in the community. Our community partner for the residency is Kathie Rasmussen Women’s Theatre (KRASS). The company is producing TROUBLE IN MIND by Alice Childress, which opens on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Bartell. Students in lighting are invited to attend tech rehearsals next week. They begin at 6pm.

Kathy Perkins is a Professor Emerita (1989-2011) in lighting design and Africa and African Diaspora theatre at UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). In addition to productions at UIUC, Perkins has designed lighting throughout the U.S. at such regional theatres as American Conservatory Theatre (ACT), Arena Stage, Berkeley Repertory, Seattle Repertory, St. Louis Black Repertory, The Alliance, Goodman, Steppenwolf, Congo Square, Manhattan Theatre Club, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), New Federal Theatre, eta Creative Arts, Mark Taper, Indiana Repertory, Court Theatre, Writers Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Los Angeles Theatre Center, Two Rivers Theatre, Playmakers Repertory Company, and Victory Gardens. She is the recipient of such design awards as NAACP Image Award, National Black Theatre Festival Award, and was a nominee for the L.A. Ovation Award and New York’s Audelco.
